The planning and restoration of the Fort Miles
Historic Site, which was recently added to the National Register of Historic
Places, is a long-term endeavor that will take between five to seven years
to complete and will cost upwards of $10 million. There is a lot of work to
be done and many ways for groups or individuals to become active
participants in the efforts to protect and preserve the legacy of Fort
Miles. Ways in which to become involved may include:
Oral Histories:
We would like to interview those that served at Fort Miles, especially
during World War II. Any insights and memories will help us to better
understand the operation and daily lives of the soldiers as well as assist
us in our interpreting of the site. In addition, we would like to talk with
those that lived in the area during World War II to get their insights into
how the war and the fort affected people locally.
Historic Artifacts:
We are looking for original photos, posters, letters,
base newspapers, uniforms, equipment, and anything else related to World War
II era Fort Miles. Donations of these items are welcome, and will be placed
within our museum. Note: Original photos can be scanned.
Restoration:
If
you have a group or are an individual that would like to assist in our
restoration, let us know. Groups can be scheduled and there are periodic
general public work days held at least once a month. Activities may include
but are not limited to cleaning and maintaining the guns, painting,
sandbagging, and even archeological work.
If you are interested in helping the project, contact our friends group, the
Fort Miles Historical Association (FMHA).
