Racked Out

This soldier looks like he's out cold. His rack is the tubular steel type and unpainted. Note the plain white pillow case and white sheets. He also has 2 wool blankets.

Card Game

Soldiers at Fort Miles playing cards on a bunk. This wool blanket clearly shows a US stamp, which is unusual for blankets of the time period since most are missing this marking. This appears to be a steel rack with square tubing on the head and foot.

Cold Night

Looks like a cold night... this soldier is using what looks like an extra comforter. Note the stove in the middle of the room. Many variations of stoves can be seen in photos of Fort Miles. This may be the inside of a tent rather than a barracks as suggested by a centrally placed stove with bunks surrounding it on the walls.

Shaving

Here a soldier is shaving. Interesting to note the striped GI pillowcase behind him, and the decor on the walls.

A Glimpse

Not sure what's going on here. Looks like there are coins on the floor. A glimpse of the inside of the barracks.

Radio Time

Here the first sergeant (note the 2 rockers under the diamond) and another soldier are kicked back listening to the radio. Not sure what's above the 1st Sgt.'s rack, but you can see the power cord for the radio draped across it. Also seen under the other soldier's rack is a pair of slippers, and what appears to be a barracks bag. Hard to tell.

Relaxing

Here a soldier is relaxing on his bunk. Note the small makeshift table to the right. A radio and an ashtray are on the tabletop, and some books and a newspaper are stacked underneath.

Personal Space

This photo shows a soldier's personal space. Note the towels hanging from a wire between the shelf supports, his shaving mirror and a photo on the shelf, and a photo and calendar pinned to the wall above.

Sock Repair

This soldier sits on an unmade bunk and repairs a sock. Note his sleeping gear, his footwear, and personal effects (suitcase, cardboard box).

Keeper of the Arms

This soldier is perched atop an M1920 rifle rack full of M1903 Springfield rifles. Note behind him the uniforms hanging along the back wall.
