"...chills ran up my spine, and I was 19 years old again."  Horace Knowles, Veteran, Battery C 261st CA

Our re-enactors are quite literally the life of Fort Miles today.  Without them, our barracks would be merely empty buildings.  Horace Knowles, a veteran from Fort Miles put it best one event weekend.  At the end of the day, he found me and said, "I want to thank you.  When I walked into those barracks, and saw the men there with their foot lockers and displays - chills ran up my spine and I was 19 years old again."

That is why we do this.

Below you can learn more about the units that come together at Fort Miles and make history come to life for us.  The men and women of these units have made this project their own, and have dedicated thousands of volunteer hours to making this museum a success.  The talent and knowledge base that they have made available to us is truly priceless, and Fort Miles would not be where it is today without their support.  Just as the 261st did in 1941, they have established the military functioning of Fort Miles.  Take a moment to learn more about the men and women that have called Fort Miles a home.

The 45th Infantry Division has a long and proud history. The men who served in this unit proved themselves to be some of the finest citizen soldiers the United States had to offer. These men deserve our respect, and they deserve our gratitude. Saying "Thank you" just didn't seem to be enough. We formed a non-profit educational association dedicated to the preservation of the history of World War II. The World War II Recreation Association has recently become official partners of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, helping form a national archive of oral histories from veterans. Through living history presentations we are able to teach people about who these men were, and what they did to defend the freedoms we have today. Through the Venturing Crew that is a part of our association we are teaching the next generation about a time that is being forgotten by many, and keeping their legacy alive.

To accurately portray, and honor the Officers & Men of the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment - “Down to Earth.”  We have chosen specifically the paratroopers of the 2nd Battalion 507th PIR as their legacy has been overlooked by all but a few true historians. Although the unit trained at the famous Camp Taccoa, Georgia alongside the world-renowned “Band of Brothers” they have never shared the limelight. It is our goal that their story is not lost forever.

Our impressions focus primarily on Civilian Defense but members have done impressions as wide ranging as Coast Guard Beach Patrol and a Quartermaster Corps Military Police K-9 Unit. Also in our ranks are defense plant workers and even a member of the Rockford Peaches Women's Baseball League.

We attend swing dances, USO Canteen shows and air shows. (You do not have to know how to swing dance for our group functions.)  Our Homefront and Military displays are a big attraction at community events. We attend parades and Patriotic functions, all done in period attire.

If you like the 1940's era and enjoy dressing in costume then, "we want you".  We are a fun group who likes to attend events together.
Our mission is to educate the public on WWII and the Homefront as portrayed during the war years.
