MSGT Hattier was born in the 381st Infantry Hospital Trieste Italy. As the son of a Soldier he grew up where ever his father, SFC Donald D Hattier was stationed. Being stationed in the Stuttgart, Germany, American Zone in the 1953-63 time period, learning near fluent German, and traveling a lot through Europe helped build a sense of what we as Americans were fighting for. This sparked a life long desire to study the history of the time period. While getting his BS in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute he minored in history in 1975.

Master Sergeant Hattier continued his study of the WW2 time period, studying not only the history, but the development of the technology of the time period. While on a Cub Scout Pack tour to Cape Henlopen State Park, MSGT Hattier and his son discovered Fort Miles and Battery 519. This opened up the study of Home Front Defense and not just the overseas operations that are most commonly thought of.
