Here we will help you determine whether or not you need to complete a background check in order to participate in DE State Parks events.? Valid background checks are required for all volunteers working on any DE State Parks facility.
We have been working closely with DE State Parks in order to streamline this process, and make it as easy as possible for our volunteers.? You may be exempt from having to perform a background check.? In order to determine this, we'll ask you a few questions.

Background Checks
Who does the background checks?
Delaware State Parks has contracted with Southeastern Security Consultants, Inc. (SSCI) to conduct the background checks.? You can read more about them here.
How much will the background check cost me?
Nothing.? Delaware State Parks will pay for the background check.
What information is disclosed to DE State Parks and the 261st?
All personal information is redacted.? We only see whether or not there are any felony records or sex offenses.? The specifics of those records are not disclosed to us - it is simply a "go" or "no-go."? The decision to make this an online portal instead of a form was a result of re-enactor feedback in which concerns were voiced about the disclosure of personally identifiable information such as social security numbers.? This method gives our volunteers a secure location in which they can enter that data themselves instead of sending us a form.
I can't see the questions without entering personal data.? What will they ask me?
You will only enter the personal data needed to conduct the check.
How long is my background check good for?
Two years.? At the end of the two year period you will be prompted to renew your background check and membership.? If you completed a check last year, then you're good to go for this year!? We keep records of who has completed their check and when, so we'll be able to see this when you register.
Why do this background check at all?? I've never had to do this.
This requirement is designed to protect our volunteers and visiting public.? The intention is not to imply that we don't trust the people who have been volunteering at Fort Miles for several years now.? It is quite the opposite.? Imagine seeing a photograph in the newspaper of a volunteer dressed in uniform with a weapon slung across his shoulder, kneeling down and talking to a young child.? The headline reads, "Delaware State Parks Celebrates WWII."? Then someone realizes that the volunteer in that photo is a registered sex offender.? Something like that could place this entire event in jeopardy.? In order to protect our current volunteers from any possible accusations, and to protect our event for years to come, it is the policy of Delaware State Parks to screen all of their volunteers in advance.? This screening process is a requirement for all DE State Parks volunteers at all facilities, regardless of the service they perform.
Military / DoD / LEO / CCW Credentials
Why do you accept this form of ID in lieu of a background check?
Military personnel and Department of Defense employees are required to undergo periodic background checks.? All Soldiers are expected to handle a firearm at least annually.? Some are required to have investigations for security clearances.? Law enforcement officers are trained in the handling of weapons, and undergo routine background investigations as a condition of their service.? Closed Carry Weapons permit holders also undergo routine criminal background checks.? Because of these requirements, and out of respect for those who serve in our military and law enforcement agencies, DE State Parks agreed to accept these credentials in lieu of a background check.?
Isn't it illegal to make a copy of a US Government ID card (CAC)?
The photocopying of a military identification card or a common access card is illegal under Title 18, U.S. Code Part 1, Chapter 33, Section 701.? However, it is not illegal to copy a military ID card if that copy is being furnished to a government agency for official use.? The copy of your military ID is being given directly to the State of Delaware for official use as verification of your military service.? If you still feel uncomfortable providing a copy of your ID, you may instead provide a memorandum from your chain of command verifying your service.
Can I just show my ID at the gate when I arrive?
Sure, just don't forget it.? If you choose to do this, please let 261st Command know in advance so a memorandum for record can be prepared documenting your decision to do so.? You will need to sign the memorandum upon showing your ID at the gate.
